[SOLVED] application error on music,video,bing,etc

Hi Tomas and alduin

I will see if I can deal with the corruptions here, don't worry about starting a new thread.

This is just going to be an introductory post, I will perform the fix in a bit!

We're seeing a lot of corrupt files on this system:

However, I've just been looking over some of the other logs you have given, at this doesn't quite match up.

I need to investigate further before I fix those files listed above. Also, as Tomas said, these may or may not be the actual cause of the issue.

Please can you do the following:

SFC Scan

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15 minutes)

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Regards,
Stephen

yes but the issue still persists.

Did it show any error?

Could you please share the following?

  • Exported registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
  • Exported registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
  • ProcMon log when launching Zune Music (I would like to see if the commands you ran made any difference)

Thank you.

it didn't show any error. heres the file sir. thank you very much

Thanks. I think, I have an idea.

This is what I found in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER.reg file you have exported:

Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.214.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe]
"Flags"=dword:00000001
"InstallTime"=hex(b):67,de,54,ba,70,e5,ce,01

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.339.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe]
"Flags"=dword:00000001
"InstallTime"=hex(b):73,53,c2,8c,57,fc,ce,01

This seems to be what's causing the following error visible in the Event Log you attached earlier:

Code:
The app Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft.ZuneMusic's package family (Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe) has more than one package installed. This is not supported, so the app was not activated for the Windows.Launch contract.

I was able to reproduce this in my lab: I had a single key (Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.214.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe on a freshly installed Windows 8.1 machine and Zune Music was working OK. Then, I created a second key (Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.339.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe) there. As soon as I did that, Zune Music is no longer starting and I see the same exact error as you do in the Event Log.

So, deleting one of the keys could help, BUT:

  • I'm not 100% sure which one of the two keys should be deleted
  • Deleting a key requires modified permissions in the Registry

If you want to proceed, please follow these steps:

Getting permissions:
  1. Open RegEdit
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe
  3. Right click on this key and select Permissions...
  4. Click Permissions
  5. Click Advanced
  6. On the top of the window, near Owner: SYSTEM, click Change
  7. Type Administrators and click OK
  8. Select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click OK
  9. In the Group or user names section find Administrators and check Full control at the bottom
  10. Click OK
Doing a backup:
  1. Right click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe
  2. Select Export
  3. Save file as ZuneMusicBak.reg somewhere on your disk
Deleting the key:
  1. Right click on Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.214.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe (it's inside HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModel\Repository\Families\Microsoft.ZuneMusic_8wekyb3d8bbwe) and select delete
  2. Reboot your computer

As I've said, I'm not 100% sure whether we should delete Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.214.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe or Microsoft.ZuneMusic_2.2.339.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe, but, judging from your latest ProcMon log, it seems that 339 is being used and we should delete 214 one. Another approach could be deleting both keys and then re-registering Zune Music using Add-AppxPackage command. I tried this in my lab, and re-registering the app indeed recreates the key after deleting it. We can try this approach later if the one described above won't work (I might need some additional data to see what changed).

thanks tekno venus. heres the file https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...etected-by-system-file-checker.html#post61421 .yes these may not be the actual cause of the issue cuz there was no corruption at the time when the problem exist. but hopefully this corruption will fix. thank you

I am currently sourcing files as I type, but I would like you to run some hardware diagnostics due to the large amount of corruptions.

chkdsk /f

  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  4. Reboot
  5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from the link below:

Thank you.

I am not an expert on the ins and outs of check disk - I have asked an expert to take a look at the log.

In the mean time, could you please do the following:

Please run Memtest86+ to check your RAM. A tutorial on how to do this is available here: Test RAM With Memtest86+ - Sysnative Forums

Regards,
Stephen

I really glad to hear it worked! Please mark this topic as "Solved", if you can.

Have a merry Christmas ;-)

Not to worry!

Good to hear the issue is solved. Any work we do now will just be for the general health of the machine.

After hearing back from another staff member on the check disk log - I recommend backing up your data to an external hard drive or other media ASAP.

Whilst not generally an issue on it's own, chkdsk has detected a bad sector on the drive. This is often an indicator the drive is not as healthy as it should be, and potentially nearing the end of it's life.

So, backup your data now. Once you have ensured you have made suitable backups of your data, can you please test the drive again, ensuring you type the /f part of the command.

Hi,

CheckDisk has not reported any problems, but this does concern me slightly -

Code:
4 KB in bad sectors.

I would like you to test the HDD with SeaTools - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/4072-hard-drive-hdd-diagnostics.html. Please run the SHORT DST and the LONG TEST

Let me know the results.

Stephen

Hi,

There should be no need to update the BIOS/UEFI.

I know it's not your PC, but the instructions should be the same. Follow these to try and boot from the CD - Acer UEFI Boot From CD/DVD (AXC-605-ER30)
